My birds eat a mix of:

  • Roudybush maintainence medium pellets;
  • Harrison's high-potency coarse pellets;
  • Zupreem pellets, fruity version, parrot/conure size;
  • raw no-shell almonds;
  • roasted no-salt no-shell peanuts (and blanched raw peanuts for Tookie);
  • safflower seed;
  • walnut halves and pieces, occasional whole in-shell for large birds;
  • daily fresh fruits, some fresh veggies;
  • Sometimes other things, like crackers and people food.

I used to get Nutriberries when I had just Alex, Casey, and Jasmine. But after Bert moved, I soon switched to buying peanuts, sunflower, and safflower (I already gave then almonds). At first, I bought in-shell peanuts for Bert, but the quality was frequently poor, so I switched to the no-shell peanuts from the "natural foods" store. I added walnuts when Chester moved in, since he'd been eating them at his previous home. 2008 In-shell almonds have been poor this year, so I just get the ones without shells.

(Safflower seemed to help reduce Loki's feather-chewing. Maybe their shells feel similar to feather sheaths?)

The local "natural foods" store is a good source for no-shell sunflower and peanuts. And the warehouse store has nice almonds and walnuts. (I've stopped buying sunflower seed. Casey liked it, and Bert used to but he's no longer that interested in it.)

Parrots instinctively take a few bites of most large food objects -- say, a grape or a Nutriberry -- and throw the rest down. So I break or cut large foods into smaller pieces.

Spaghetti sauce jars make good containers for bird food. Their lids have a rubbery seal that makes them pretty airtight. I buy pellets, seeds, and nuts in bulk, then repackage them in smaller amounts for refrigerated storage until they are needed. They can also be frozen.
